1. concave mirrors can create an apparent “projected” object to an observer from a particular set of angles,
2. position and motion sensors can detect where a person is located and communicate with the projectors, creating a uniquely interactive experience, and
3. the experience can be augmented with an ultrasonic force emitter that creates the sensation of pressure, contact, and touch.
This incarnation of “touchable holography” was developed at the University of Tokyo in 2009, and was the first major step toward a real-life holodeck.
Another holodeck-like experience that has been recently explored includes incredibly fast, pulsed lasers that ionize a very precise position in space, creating a temporary plasma. That plasma not only gives tactile feedback while being safe to touch (thanks to the incredibly fast speed of the lasers), but creates real photons visible to anyone present regardless of their perspective or position. Known colloquially as “fairy lights,” they generate dots at a chosen point in three-dimensional space, where the number of pulses per second is determined by the speed, power, and other properties of the laser itself. As of 2015, this technology can produce between 4,000 and 200,000 pulses per second, with each pulse having between 50 microjoules (for the fastest pulses) and 7 millijoules (for the slowest) of energy.
